madCAM 5Xis the 3D CAM plug-in for Rhinoceros which gives the ability to perform both modeling and toolpath creation inside Rhino 3D. madCAM 5Xis perfect for 3D CAM for CNC-milling machines. All menus for controlling madCAM 5Xand generated toolpaths are inside Rhino 3D and stored together with your model.

Developed for toolmaking (Mould And Die) as well as for prototype productions, madCAM 5X includes 2 1/2-axis, 3-axis, 4-axis, indexed 5-axis, automatic remachining and more. This version is aimed for the user that needs support for 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis milling.

The extra functions needed to automatically and effectively process from a user-defined 3D stock model are included here. By automatically processing areas where there is residual material, it obtains the final finish where previous finishing operations have not reached material due to cutter size.

All features works for 3-axis, simultaneous 4-axis and indexed 5-axis. There are additional options for the axis of revolution function where the user can select the direction of the spindle axis. This makes it possible to create simultaneous 4+1 axis toolpaths.

It has extra features to avoid or process only the flat areas on a model. Included functions for removing sharp corners on the toolpath and provide a smoother motion of the machine.


Key Features and Benefits

  • Roughing - Removes all the unnecessary material from the workpiece in an effective way. madCAM 5X cuts the part in z-levels. The operator can choose a ramp angle to create a smooth approach of the cutter after every retract and traverse.
  • Finishing - Gives the final surface finish of the part. madCAM 5X effectively calculates cuts for both planar and z-level finishing. The operator controls the limit with an angle for relatively horizontal and relatively vertical surfaces. The limit is calculated from the surface normal.
  • Remachining - This method offers an opportunity to remove material that remains where the previous cutter could not reach due to size of cutter. madCAM 5X has strategies for removing material calculated from the true stock model, inside boundary curves and with surface dual contact (pencil trace).
  • Curve Milling - This includes methods for machining from curves. The curve milling offers opportunities for Engraving and strategies for toolpath projection inside boundary curves and between two curves.
  • 2 1/2 D Machining - This includes methods for machining from curves or surface edge curves. Profiling, Pocketing, Facing and Drilling.

I read a Novedge review for madCAM stating,"But there is absolutely no support for the product." That's a false statement; madCAM has publicly supported their users for over 8 years on cnczone.com.

I like madCAM's multi-axis capabilities and that today's version is 64bit. The install was very quick with the 30day trial as default. I spent hours playing with toolpaths and the post process. The Toolpath Simulator is awkward, but it's useful and I adjusted to how it works. Once acclimated, toolpath development flows extremely well with the modelling process.

For the user who is new to Rhino; the learning curve will be smoother and faster if you have a class or instructional video.

A help file provides specific settings needed for modelling along with variable descriptions for posting and procedures for toolbar setting. madCAM's toolbar command and scripting is from the Rhino process, therefore customizing the toolbar is a breeze.

Example; Arc specific toolpath creation was undeveloped at the time of my purchase, but the process could act when executing a command to force arc toolpath. A custom button was created on the fly and the command inserted for immediate use. The process for toolbar editing is very fast and productive.

I feel most CAM software is developed on a platform for milling while woodworkers who find these platforms useful adapt them for routing. I'm not certain if the madCAM developer has a focus on 'woodworking' sales, but at the current price-tier many woodworkers could justify the purchase.

Software packages of all types are in constant development. As long as the developer appears to have an interest in their product and seems motivated to improve their product, I'll support them when I can.

For today, I'm grateful to have Rhino and madCAM and foresee a bright future for them.

Cant beat it for $ value.
Does it all.
I actually was deciding between rhinocam and madcam and for me i found madcam more intuetive. I do come from old versions of mastercam so that may have something to do.
