Cant beat it for $ value. Does it all. I actually was deciding between rhinocam and madcam and for me i found madcam more intuetive. I do come from old versions of mastercam so that may have something to do.
Having looked at quite a few CAM options MadCam has excellent features such as 4th (and 5th) axis control and re-machining yet it is very easy to use. If you're looking for a CAM program make sure you try them out before committing (I know a school that spent $$$ on a CAD program that was way too complicated which they are now looking to replace). Even if you don't use Rhino for you CAD work it's worth getting it just to be able to use MadCam and it still works out cheaper than similar CAM packages. The only thing I miss from the previous CAM software I was using is being able to change a parameter of a tool or similar and have that flow through and update the paths made with that tool - I don't think you can do this without remaking the path in MadCam but I could be wrong. To sum up I'm very happy with the software and recommend it heartily
I was scepitcal purchasing this at first, especially on a student budget. But this is a great piece of software for anyone wanting to learn CAM. It packs in so many features and the interface is great. I love working in the Rhino Enviroment and this "Plug-In" is a great addition to Rhino. I've had this for a little over a month now and I find new features and ways to program tool paths everytime I use it. Highly recommended to anyone.
I read a Novedge review for madCAM stating,"But there is absolutely no support for the product." That's a false statement; madCAM has publicly supported their users for over 8 years on cnczone.com. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/madcam/
I like madCAM's multi-axis capabilities and that today's version is 64bit. The install was very quick with the 30day trial as default. I spent hours playing with toolpaths and the post process. The Toolpath Simulator is awkward, but it's useful and I adjusted to how it works. Once acclimated, toolpath development flows extremely well with the modelling process.
For the user who is new to Rhino; the learning curve will be smoother and faster if you have a class or instructional video.
A help file provides specific settings needed for modelling along with variable descriptions for posting and procedures for toolbar setting. madCAM's toolbar command and scripting is from the Rhino process, therefore customizing the toolbar is a breeze.
Example; Arc specific toolpath creation was undeveloped at the time of my purchase, but the process could act when executing a command to force arc toolpath. A custom button was created on the fly and the command inserted for immediate use. The process for toolbar editing is very fast and productive.
I feel most CAM software is developed on a platform for milling while woodworkers who find these platforms useful adapt them for routing. I'm not certain if the madCAM developer has a focus on 'woodworking' sales, but at the current price-tier many woodworkers could justify the purchase.
Software packages of all types are in constant development. As long as the developer appears to have an interest in their product and seems motivated to improve their product, I'll support them when I can.
For today, I'm grateful to have Rhino and madCAM and foresee a bright future for them.
It sort of works. But there is absolutely no support for the product.
