Conference: Computational Design and Architecture in Turkey
Computational Design Initiative Istanbul presents a conference bringing together architects focused on computation design theory, practices and methodsComputer Generated Design in Architecture in Turkey and GloballyApril 3, 2013 - 14:00-18:30hIstanbul (Turkey)Conference topicToday in non-Western context such as Turkey the nature of form making using computers is transforming the process of architecture and design. With the advent of computer generated design software, architects and designers in Turkey now have access to a range of options to generate forms. But how are computational design methods of design being applied in a country like Turkey with a mix of industrial and hand based construction methods? How are designers using computer-generated design in the design studio and then subsequently on the construction site? What kinds of practical problems are they facing when designs are sent for production and construction? How does computer generated design software interface with engineering and workshop software including BIM (Building Information Modeling)? What is the nature of data as it flows through this process? And also critically how does this use of computer-generated design in Turkey compare to global advances?Speakers: Carlos Pérez (McNeel Europe), Luis Fraguada (LaN, BAD, IaaC), Sigrid Brell-Çokcan (II Architects int, Robots in Architecture), Gökhan Avcioglu (GAD), Durmus Dilekçi (Uras X Dilekci), Elif Erdine (AA DLAB & AA Istanbul Visiting School), Gökhan Karakus (Emedya Design), Nilufer Kozikoglu (Tuspa), Salih Küçüktuna (Uras X Dilekci, Faculty of Architecture, Istanbul Bilgi University).Language: Turkish and EnglishComplete program and free registration [more...]

CTRL.SHIFT – the Control Shift in computational design
CTRL.SHIFT – the Control Shift in computational designGrasshopper + Processing workshopVienna, Austria02-07.04.2013The workshop explores the manifold relations of creativity and control in computational design. The availability of increasingly complex and sophisticated tools shifts how control and sensibility are exerted and deployed within the design process. A new computational craft is required, one that allows the embedding in computational simulation of matter and agency so that ideas propagate in a deeper ecology with degrees of autonomy that provide complex feedbacks. Objects and systems are not anymore simple assemblages of static parts but are generated from the interrelations of other complex objects within ecologies. The designer is not just merely using tools rather establishing a loop dialogue with their creative and autonomous possibilities: questioning their capacity and extension, evaluating and empathizing with the result that in turn allow configuring and being configured by them continuously. We will explore matter and agency behaviors through Grasshopper (with Millipede plugin) and Processing, interrogating the aesthetic potential of Topology Optimization and Multi-Agent Systems.Info and registration here [more...]

Landscape design in Rhino
Lands Design for Rhino is a software for designing gardens, green spaces, and landscapes that runs in the Rhino environment.Lands Design provides tools for producing technical drawings in 2D and 3D of the green space to work with, and realistic images and virtual tours through the project to perform.Lands Design is ideal for landscape architects, urban planners, town council technicians, constructors, designers and draftsmen, environment departments, nurserymen, gardeners…Features:Vegetation: Lands includes a variety of functions and types of objects related to the planting of green elements in a landscaping project. These functions will greatly help the professional when locating plant species in a garden space. Civil Work: Structural elements, like paths, fences, walls, hedges, etc. link the garden to the house and, in the case of a park or square, to its immediate surroundings. A balanced assembly of structural elements and plants will give a highly attractive spatial composition. Lands can be used to easily draw all these structural elements in both 2-D and 3-D. Terrain Modeling: On many occasions landscape professionals find that they must work on a terrain with undulating topography which requires them to draw the contour curves to be able to represent the topographical relief on a plan. Lands can generate the topographic mesh that shapes the terrain from contour curves. Urban Furniture: Lands has incorporated a vast library of urban street equipment in two and three dimensions, in order to meet the needs of landscaping professionals. This library is divided into two categories: urban furniture and play equipment. Watering System: Watering involves providing water to plants to favour their growth. Lands provides the functions required to create a watering installation with a clear and simple approach. Documentation: Lands provides many features for the documentation including self-generated tables on the plan that list the project’s elements, labelling functions that can associate a label to each plant in the project and additional dimensioning features, allowing the dimensioning of plants and civil works elements. Plant Database: Lands includes a wide plant database which can be used by the landscaping professional to insert plant species in the drawing. It can also be very useful as a tool used as reference and to submit queries and print the botanical data of different species. Render: Lands features can be expanded by using it with Flamingo nXt, a photorealistic render plug-in for Rhino. Flamingo nXt generates quality render images, it is fast and easy to use. Moreover, it includes a real time plant generator which simulates very realistic three-dimensional trees. This last feature makes Flamingo nXt the ideal tool to complement Lands features.Download Lands Design for Rhino WIP now [more...]
