IMAGINiT Technologies Releases IMAGINiT Clarity 2014 Product Line for Revit
For Immediate ReleaseIMAGINiT Technologies ReleasesIMAGINiT Clarity 2014 Product LineThree Distinct Software Solutions Save BIM Teams Time and Effort Through Improved Task Automation, Collaboration, Real-time Reporting and MoreFRAMINGHAM, MA ? May 16, 2013 —Rand Worldwide (OTCBB: RWWI), a global leader in providing technology solutions to organizations with engineering design and information technology requirements, today announced that its IMAGINiT Technologies division has released the 2014 versions of IMAGINiT Clarity, IMAGINiT Clarity LT and IMAGINiT Clarity Workshare. These three web-based collaboration tools also include new and improved features.Designed to extend the value of the Autodesk Revit Server platform, IMAGINiT Clarity and Clarity LT enhance control of Revit Server set-up, automate repetitive tasks and securely provide valuable data to non-Revit users. For architectural, engineering and construction firms that do not use Autodesk Revit Server, IMAGINiT Clarity Workshare improves the traditional file-based work sharing approach and fully automates numerous time consuming Revit software related tasks.“Our IMAGINiT Clarity product line has our customers covered – regardless whether their BIM team is using Revit or Revit Server,” says Bob Heeg, executive vice president at IMAGINiT Technologies. “The combination of listening to customer feedback, keeping pace with the latest Autodesk releases and always finding enhancements to provide added value is IMAGINiT’s winning combination.”"We're getting a lot of mileage out of Clarity for our Government and Medical facility projects,” stated Jason Gardner, BIM manager at Hoefer Wysocki Architects. “Once the model is ready, the ease-of-use and speed with which we can get information to our clients and principals is nearly instantaneous. Something that used to take us hours upon hours to do, now happens automatically in the background because our team has set up the project models with Clarity and we're able to keep our principals and clients happy and informed throughout the design process," concluded Gardner.“We started using IMAGINiT Clarity for a hospital project in South America,” commented Clay Starr, associate at RTKL Associates Inc. Starr continues, “The timing was great as we needed to provide datasheets to the client, and that’s a very time consuming effort. After we confirmed the accuracy of the data, even translating it into Spanish, we used Clarity to generate over 1,700 room datasheets in a short amount of time. We’re excited about the upcoming enhancements and will consider expanding its use across our practice.”Each of these three web-based collaboration tools provide task automation, project reporting, system monitoring and project level security to provide easy sharing of BIM data inside organizations and amongst external partners. In addition to offering file-based project sharing as well as support for Revit Server 2013 and 2014, IMAGINiT Clarity and Clarity LT have numerous new and improved features. The 2014 version of IMAGINiT Clarity Workshare has also received extensive improvements which have also been based largely on customer feedback.Task AutomationAll Clarity products allow tasks to be automated in three ways: every time a Revit file is updated; at a scheduled time; or on demand. Mundane tasks such as exporting data to Navisworks or DGN file formats or creating ModelReview reports can now be performed on demand, freeing up staff to undertake higher value tasks. To share model data with team members who don’t use Revit, Clarity products can automatically generate a variety of file export options including PDF, DWF, DWG, IFC, GBxml, FBX and more.DatasheetsDue to popular demand, all Clarity products have now greatly extended the capabilities of datasheets to go beyond the popular room data sheets. BIM team members now have almost 20 different data sheet options to choose from including furniture and equipment.Control that Mimics Business WorkflowThe IMAGINiT Clarity product family is specifically designed to enhance collaboration and reduce time and resources required to complete necessary tasks. In line with this objective, now all Clarity products can assign roles that mimic typical workflows. For example, the BIM coordinator role can now assign tasks while a new view only role can be used by marketing staff who can access, view and share data, but cannot make any changes to the model.Live Online PresentationIn addition to the details available online for all three new IMAGINiT Clarity products, there is a free webcast on May 17, 2013 at 10 AM and 2PM (Eastern Time for North America). The live presentation that will cover each of the products is free, butregistration is required. Log into this online presentation from any location and listen to audio through your computer speakers and chat live with the developers of the IMAGINiT Clarity products.Availability & PricingAll IMAGINiT Clarity products are available with perpetual licensing. New this year, each product is also available on a subscription basis for those who want to use the tools for a specific project.IMAGINiT Clarity Workshare offers an unlimited number of users and projects and also includes basic installation and training. Maintenance fees apply. For organizations interested in a solution specifically for Revit Server, IMAGINiT Clarity and IMAGINiT Clarity LT can be packaged with Autodesk Revit Server or can be integrated into an existing installation. Setup and training is included and managed by IMAGINiT’s trusted team of implementation and training experts. Pricing is dependent on number of locations, hosts, accelerators and task servers. Maintenance and subscription fees apply. From the Ground Up: Autodesk Shared Reference Point Tool – Now available - It is Alive in the Lab
I'm sure this will keep your manholes happy and be less of a pain in the asphalt. Now, if there could only be a Revit Civil product, life would be great/grate. Source/Link: http://labs.blogs.com/its_alive_in_the_lab/2013/05/from-the-ground-up-autodesk-shared-reference-point-tool-now-available.html It is Alive in the LabThe BIM Coordinator for AutoCAD Civil 3D and Revit was our free technology preview that assists project team members with building and site grids. The technology preview automated the more error-prone manual steps in the coordination of site and building grids between the AutoCAD and Revit environments. The tool specified one common XYZ point and its orientation in the XY plane between the two coordinate systems. This reference point defined the relationship between the building and site grid.Remember my blog post:It's Alive in the Lab: BIM Coordinator for AutoCAD Civil 3D / Revit to graduate from Autodesk LabsCheck out this recent blog post:From the Ground Up: Autodesk Shared Reference Point Tool – Now availableOriginally available in Subscription Center for AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 and Revit 2013, it is now also available for AutoCAD Civil 3D 2014 and Revit 2014.Completion is alive in the lab [more...]

AGC BIMForum Level of Development Specification that has been released for review and comment
LOD or LOLLevel of Development or Lots of Lines (Alix and Cindy, feel free to use that "line").Maybe, BIM Level of Difficulty?Ladies and gentlemen, this is one of the most important and "this will kick you in the ass if you don't pay attention" aspects of BIM. Even if you don't fill out the survey, you'd better study this, especially if you're a subcontractor. Source/Link: http://www.linkedin.com/groups/AGC-BIMForum-Level-Development-Specification-137723%2ES%2E236579927?view=&srchtype=discussedNews&gid=137723&item=236579927&type=member&trk=eml-anet_dig-b_pd-ttl-hdp&ut=3MT455YR6oYBI1&_mSplash=1AGC BIMForum Level of Development Specification that has been released for review and commentThe AGC is looking for input on the draft version of the AGC BIMForum Level of Development Specification that has been released for review and comment on April 24th, 2013.This is to be a supplement to help with use of the AIA E-202 contract document. The AGC is looking for comment and criticism of the document before June 7th 2013.The final document is scheduled to be released to the public on July 13th,2013 in a fully Indexed, bookmarked and hyperlinked PDF format. LOD Specification Draft. Download your copy of the Specification here:http://bimforum.org/lod/Feedback is welcome and may be submitted until the public comment period ends on June 7, 2013.Please take a moment to complete the following survey:http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3SCRVL2Source/Link: http://bimforum.org/lod/The Level of Development (LOD) Specification is a reference that enables practitioners in the AEC Industry to specify and articulate with a high level of clarity the content and reliability of Building Information Models (BIMs) at various stages in the design and construction process. The LOD Specification utilizes the basic LOD definitions developed by the AIA for the AIA G202-2013 Building Information Modeling ProtocolForm and is organized by CSI Uniformat 2010. It defines and illustrates characteristics of model elements of different building systems at different Levels of Development. This clear articulation allows model authors to define what their models can be relied on for, and allows downstream users to clearly understand the usability and the limitations of models they are receiving. The intent of the Specification is to help explain the LOD framework and standardize its use so that it becomes more useful as a communication tool. It does not prescribe what Levels of Development are to be reached at what point in a project but leaves the specification of the model progression to the user of this document. To accomplish the document’s intent, its primary objectives are:· To help teams, including owners, to specify BIM deliverables and to get a clear picture of what will be included in a BIM deliverable· To help design managers explain to their teams the information and detail that needs to be provided at various points in the design process· To provide a standard that can be referenced by contracts and BIM execution plans.First name*Last name*Email*Industry Segment*ConstructorConstruction ManagerDesign professionalOwnerAttorneySoftware developerFabricator/supplierOtherIf other, please explain hereSubmi [more...]

A Sad BIM day - The journey continues
It with great sadness that I write this blog post. Today is my last day at ACAI Associates and ACAI Technologies. Unfortunately, I need to be much closer to home due to the health of my parents and spending between 90 and 120 minutes a day commuting, necessitated a move to a new adventure. It was a very emotional decision to make and I can't tell you enough how amazing the ACAI family is. I've never worked with a more passionate, hard working, intelligent, motivated and caring group of people. I've never seen an architecture firm care this much about their quality, deliverables and comittment to their clients. Being the first architecture firm I've ever worked at, I had no idea what really goes on day to day. If there's one thing I've learned, is that it's exhausting. Between the deadlines, decisions and dollars (3D), all of the details that go into the details, keeping the disciplines disciplined (you must be disciplined in your discipline or you will be disciplined), I don't know how you guys do this day in and day out. My time at ACAI was very special to me and I'm forever grateful to Adolfo Cotilla (yes, Adolfo, I am mentioning your name in a blog post) and Cindy Baldwin (who I hope is reading this on her iPad and retweeting it (@CindyWBaldin) to the whole world of BuildingSmart alliance followers. The leaders of the company are brilliant, dynamic and amazing in what they've created, not just for the growth of the company in the past few years, but also for their wisdom in picking the best and smartest people to be a part of the ACAI team. It's been an honor working with the two of you and I look forward to many years of continuing to work with you in my new role as a consultant to the firm. Adolfo, thank you for taking the leap of faith with BIM and allowing the company to expand into so many different ways. I can't imagine what it's like for a principal to take the risk of new technologies and methodologies, but you embraced it and I'm sad that I can't be there on a daily basis to help even more. Cindy, for someone who doesn't drink coffee, I don't know how you have even more energy that I do. Thank you for the opportunity to spend the last 18 months having a BIM technology laboratory and for the chance to further my passion for BIM. I'm so proud of your accomplishments in growing the ACAI family and watching what you've done with the buildingSmart alliance, thankful to have been up on stage with you for some of your amazing BIM presentations and lectures and honored to work with someone who's spent so much time researching BIM and it's technologies (and for reading my blog these past few years and taking some of my ideas and posts and turning them into something wonderful). To my special BIM friends Alix, Nic, Justin, Julio, Cesar, Flo, Oscar, David, Raul, Bryan, Peck and Brian, I will miss our daily BIM bantering and I've never seen such hard working and talented people. You are all so skilled and wonderful, it saddens me to not be there to see the craziness, loudness and hectic work that you do. Well, maybe I won't miss that so much as it stresses me out to see how you guys manage to get everything done that you do. You all do such amazing work and are truly a fantastic team of people. Your willingness to take on new challenges, find ways to solve problems and watching you collaborate and share your knowledge with each other, made me proud to be a part of your team and help in my own special way. I never in my life thought I'd end up working at an architecture firm, but I have learned so much from the experience that I know that I never want to do that ever again. My apologies for previous blog posts where I said anything unkind about your industry. I still hate AutoCAD and anyone who uses it on a daily basis for their clients. I have a new found respect for anyone and any firm who takes on the challenge of moving to BIM and the pain and gain from making that transition. It's a monumental commitment and even though Revit looks so easy, it's such a pain in the ass to learn how to truly harness it's capabilities. I don't know how you do it and manage to meet your daily deadlines. Alix and David, I'll miss you both the most and I know you'll both continue to do great things for the company. Maybe without me there as a distraction, you'll get even more done. Alix, I'm only a join.me click away from any questions or problems you run into. David, I'm putting a filter on the firewall so you don't have to listen to that horrible dribble on your radio streaming and I'm truly honored to have seen what you've done over the past 6 years with BIM and I'm in awe of your BIM greatness and technology talents. There are only two people in the world that I can ever have geeky Excel formula conversations with, so I'm extra thankful that we've been able to talk about stuff that makes everyone else's eyes glaze over. Alix, I can hardly wait for you to drop your Surface and have a trio of devices with cracked glass. Please send me a picture of it when it's been crackingly customized. To everyone else reading this, I'm still going to continue with the blog as I'm going to be working for a national subcontractor and I'll be telling you more about my role there and it will be interesting to see BIM in action at the subcontractor level. As one chapter ends, a new one begins. Although I'm excited to be working much closer to home, I will never forget my time at ACAI and will truly miss being there every day. I've never been sad to leave a job or a company before, but there is truly something magical there and maybe it's just because BIM is all about the people and what an amazing group of people I've had the honor of sharing my life with. Thank you.GregoryThe workflow and process disrupter [more...]

Figured out how to actually view point cloud data files on my iPad #BIM #Autodesk #iPad
Ok Alix, you really pissed me off when you said my last attempt was only an image and not really a point cloud on my iPad. So, I did what anyone without a workflow and process would do. I figured out a way to piss you off and create a new dimension to BIM.If you're using Autodesk 2013 software, you can bring your point clouds into Navisworks. Then, if you're lucky enough to have it, export your Navisworks model to BIM Glue. Then you can see your point cloud project on the iPad. I haven't tried this with Navisworks 2014 since Autodesk hasn't released their BIM Glue plugin yet (and there's no reason for the delay)! It does take a bit of time to upload and parse, and it's not the fastest of ways to view your point cloud, especially compared to the awesome Recap program, but I did manage to open the model and walk through the project as seen in the video below. It really is awesome. File size is an issue and I don't know how many scan files you can load at once into Glue. It's not the most elegant solution, but I wanted a way to see a point cloud on the iPad and now Alix owes me an apology! PS. Kris, call me and I'll walk you through it (and you owe me a beer). Cindy, thank you for letting me have the BIM laboratory to invent creations like this.If you don't have a Glue account, you can save the point cloud files as NWDs and email them to your iPad and then you can view them on Glue. http://youtu.be/wI7Em4A3t1A ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Join the buildingSMART alliance - National BIM Standards Provider• Are you getting your CM-BIM credential? Video: BIM Point Cloud Export to iPad Viewer
As our company, ACAI Technologies, Inc., expands its services, I've been having a lot of fun playing with point cloud projects. The bad news is that it's a big pain to get the data into Revit 2013 and Navisworks 2013. We're working with Faro laser scans and there is a slight hack trick that you need to do to import the scans into Autodesk products. The good news is that it's much easier in Revit and Navisworks 2014 programs. Also, Autodesk Recap rocks and is a great new tool. It converts the scans quickly and is great to walk through a scanned building. Now that I got the process down pat, I got bored and decided to try to get a laser scan onto my iPad. If you're going to be doing BIM, then you have to make the information portable and accessible from anywhere. Otherwise, you might as well be living in the CAD world and don't bother saying you collaborate with anyone. For the record, you can't actually view the point cloud data on the iPad. What you can do is get the photos taken during the laser scan to export and view those on the iPad. In the video below is just one scan, but you can link multiple scans together. That's tomorrow's project for me. If you want to learn how to do this, contact me and we can discuss the process. Oh, by the way, if you haven't, go to www.autodesk.com/recap and download it now. You can stich photos together and make a 3D scene without a laser scanner.http://youtu.be/MyLUkyZxK2A ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Join the buildingSMART alliance - National BIM Standards Provider• Are you getting your CM-BIM credential? Klorman Construction Case Study from LAX Terminal Expansion Project
What a great combination, Trimble and VICO. Sure, design and clash detection is important, but 95% of the owner's money goes towards construction and operations. Any tool that helps speed up the workflow and process and allows for automation, is golden. Stick that up your layers and line weights. Vico 101 WebinarTrimble Buildings Case Study: Klorman Construction and the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAXWhat does it take to build a successful construction firm today? In one man's experience – a lot of grit, a lot of drive, sometimes sticking your neck out, and an ongoing commitment to the best technologies. In this Fridays with Trimble webinar, we'll take a look at Klorman Construction, one of the largest concrete contractors in the US, and their evolution as a high tech construction firm.In particular, we'll examine how Klorman used Trimble technologies to differentiate themselves during the bid, construction, and delivery of the new Los Angeles Airport Tom Bradley International Terminal. This 7-story terminal, a composite structural concrete and structural steel design, is over 665,000 square feet and will be delivered later this summer. The project has benefitted significantly from Klorman's use of Trimble construction solutions.Who: Klorman Construction and Trimble BuildingsWhat: LAX Tom Bradley International Terminal Case StudyWhen:Friday, May 3, 2013 at 12 Noon EasternWhere:An online webinar – join from any laptop with a phone line or an internet connectionWhy:See how Klorman utilized Trimble hardware and software to win, build, and deliver this projectHow:Register todayKlorman Construction has long been known as a cutting-edge contractor. The team has always been at the forefront of new technologies and standardizing their company on the best platforms. This legacy goes back to computerized project controls in 1981, to CADD in 1986, and Windows in 1996. So it should come as no surprise that Klorman recognized Trimble solutions as best-in-breed for structural steel and concrete modeling and coordination (Tekla Structures and Tekla BIMsight), mobile collaboration with construction project management (Prolog), Robotic Total Stations for layout (Trimble), 3D laser scanning for as-built conditions (Trimble), and BIM-based estimating and scheduling (Vico Office).Throughout the case study, Klorman will highlight actual project ROI, including how: • Use of Prolog reduced the average management time per project per week by approximately 160 hours. This allowed management and supervisors to spend 35% more time in the field. • Use of Tekla models increased off-site prefabrication by 30%. • Use of Tekla BIMsight caught plan change early enough to avoid $350,000 with structural steel and cast-in-place concrete. • Use of Vico Office reduced estimating time by 8 hours per iteration while accuracy increased by 3%; production control helped deliver project 5% faster. • Use of Robotic Total Stations reduced the layout costs by 50% and reduced the cost or rework for tolerance issues by 80%. • Use of 3D Laser Scanning and as-built model identified and solved $100,000 issue and provided as-is documentation.Together we'll learn how Klorman standardized on these Trimble solutions and what it means in terms of data flow, decision making, efficiency, and productivity. Plus, you will have the opportunity to ask questions of the Klorman team: are project more predictable? Has risk been elevated or removed? Do you need a special workforce? How do you balance IT with the science and art of building?Everyone on your pursuit, precon, and operations teams will want to see this, especially if you want to: • Develop more efficiencies for your own self-perform divisions; • Develop owner deliverables that really matter; • Efficiently track change orders (268 approved on this project as of 12/31/12, potential change orders (approximately 900), emails (approximately 93,000), submittals, inspections, and punchlists at headquarters, in the trailer, and on the jobsite; • How to proactively layout and control the work for as-built versus as-planned; • See what a "handover BIM" looks like and how it will be used by the facilities engineers.Who: Klorman Construction and Trimble BuildingsWhat: LAX Tom Bradley International Terminal Case StudyWhen:Friday, May 3, 2013 at 12 Noon EasternWhere:An online webinar – join from any laptop with a phone line or an internet connectionWhy:See how Klorman utilized Trimble hardware and software to win, build, and deliver this projectHow:Register todayEven if you can't make the designated date/time, take five minutes to register for the webinar now and you'll automatically receive the link to watch the recorded webinar.Learn from your peers with your peers at Fridays with Trimble! It's not enough time to start a new project...but it might just be the right amount of time to read a quick article and get us thinking. The next time you find yourself with a little opening in your day, turn to this list of construction articles and see if it doesn't spark a new conversation around the office or at least a tidbit to share in the next meeting.Top 10 Things Every BIM Manager Should Know It's a great time to be a BIM Manager in construction. It's a chance to combine your love of building with the latest technology and Lean methodologies. You get to carve out strategy and help everyone with the tools that they need to win new business and successfully execute profitable projects.Top 10 Reasons Why PMs Should Champion BIM Project Managers have a lot to gain from 5D BIM: better management of subs and optimizing Owner satisfaction with cash flow reports, work in place reports, look ahead schedules, and even earned value analyses.Top 10 Reasons to Do 5D BIM There are at least ten reasons to deploy BIM across the enterprise. Our customers are exploiting their capabilities with 5D BIM to win new business, provide a better experience to Owners, and work smarter with Subs.Top 10 Ways to Derail Your BIM Project Construction firms can be their biggest enemy when trying to implement BIM without considering process change, training, and even the right personnel. It's easy to believe that BIM is as easy clicking a mouse, but true 5D BIM deliverables, success, ROI, and winning new business comes from good leadership and vision.6 New Virtual Construction Best Practices Trimble has developed many virtual construction best practices working alongside construction firms around the world. This post summarizes our latest BIM methodologies including the BIM report card, coordination resolution, CPM Match, conceptual estimating with SketchUp, using Timberline and MC2 in BIM-based projects, and tips for production control. Ask Vico to train your experts in these new methodologies so you can offer them to your clients.5 Pieces of Advice for GCs Considering BIM Many GCs come to Vico for advice on how to get started with BIM. Here are 5 recommendations for new BIM departments and their managers.5 Ways to Improve BIM Model Fidelity There are several ways to dramatically improve model fidelity issues in a BIM construction project: use the model progression specification (MPS); employ reputable 3D modeling services; utilize the Vico 5D Standard Library and Warehouse; take advantage of Vico Office features to override poor model quality. The end goal are BIM models suitable for construction: 5D estimating, 4D scheduling, and 3D constructability.Five Quick Steps to Compare Cost Plan Snapshots Estimators have several options in Vico Office Cost Planner to explore "what-if scenarios" for Owner budgeting meetings. One approach is to compare two versions of the Cost Plan using the Compare & Update feature. For example, let's say that an Owner would like to go back to Plan A even though you've already gone down the Plan B (or C or D) path for quite a ways. This article illustrates how to revert back to the first cost plan and pick up where you left off.Why 5D Comes before 4D in Vico Office While the construction industry counts 3D-4D-5D BIM, Vico does it differently. Because of the tight integration between the Estimator and the Schedulers' workflows, we count 3D-5D-4D. The Estimator's components and assemblies are linked to the Scheduler's productivity rates by Task Manager. This way our quantities per location divided by productivity rates equals durations!4 Favorite Features in Vico Office R4 Vico Office Release 4 contains many customer-driven improvements. This article highlights four new features which our customers really appreciate: performance speed, model activation and publishing options, Layout Manager, and new Publishers. You can see for yourself when you upgrade to Release 4; or consider our Structured Evaluation Program to try the solution with your team.4 Best Practices for Schedule Simulation Movies GCs have 4 audiences for 4D BIM scheduling movies: the Owner, the subs before buyout, the subs in the trailer, and utilizing look-ahead schedule to solve issues before they manifest themselves. So it is imperative that the schedule, optimized with flowline, be based on quantities by location and crew productivity rates.3 HR Options for BIM Trimble offers several options to help GCs develop a deep BIM bench: project engineers, onsite project managers, modeling teams on retainer, and even certifying current staff on virtual construction best practices.3 BIM Predictions We predict the construction industry will see many companies adopting BIM Enterprises as opposed to BIM Departments. We predict BIM Managers will take up the mantle of 4D, 5D, and even 6D, instead of just managing models. And it follows that BIM and ERP will connect preconstruction and operations to accounting, procurement, and other back office roles. You can find these and other hard-hitting articles organized by construction role (estimating, scheduling, BIM Team, coordination team, executive team) in the BIM Reading List. Make it required reading for your firm. For more information on Trimble Buildings, our hardware, software, and VDC service offerings, or the AGC BIMForum, please visit our website or contact Holly Allison directly at +1-978-882-0170 x118. Lost your Revit edit menu (after installing Revit 2014)? Solution....
We had a problem on a computer today after installing Revit 2014 (which is awesomely fast). It was suggested that I uninstall Revit 2014 and 2013 and reinstall 2013 to fix the problem. Of course, my friend, Mr. Google, had a much better solution which I thought would be much more efficient then wasting 4 hours uninstalling and reinstalling software.Just go to %APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit {Product Name} 2013 and rename or delete the UIstate.dat file and then restart Revit. Problem solved. 30 seconds! Here's the Autodesk full solution. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=16825244&linkID=9243099Resetting the Autodesk Revit 2012 user interface You would like to reset the Autodesk® Revit® 2012 user interface (i.e. the Ribbon, Quick Access Toolbar, and Project Browser) back to the out-of-the-box version and remove any customization that has been applied. Online versions of Revit 2014 now available..WTF?!
Well, the day has finally arrived. Autodesk moves their software to being cloud based. Yes, I know, you would never do that, but to never worry about upgrading computers, installing patches and being able to work anywhere, even at a client's office, in the field or on any computer, seems a little enticing. Also, imagine not having to do a 58GB download of the software. Oh yeah, it's another nail in the coffin for the reseller channel. I hope they create an iPad version. But hey, how do we load our models on it? Does Autodesk dare ask to store our models on their cloud? Will there be a sync software? What if the model is 100s of MBs or getting updated frequently? How do you share your model with others at the office? Worksets? Central file syncing? A waste of time for most users? We'll just have to wait and see. It is Alive in the LabHere's an outgrowth of some work that we did in Autodesk Labs. Software Development Manager, Frederic Loranger, who also worked on Project Twitch and Project Blink, was happy to announce that Autodesk Revit 2014 and Autodesk Revit LT 2014 online trials went live on autodesk.com yesterday morning (April 18th).Here are the links for your reference:http://www.autodesk.com/products/autodesk-revit-family/free-trial http://www.autodesk.com/products/revit-lt/free-trial The online versions do check for eligibility. At this time, these links are not visible to everyone. Users must be in the US and must have a decent internet connection to our data centers. For those who meet the criteria, this is a great way for them to try Revit without having to download and install the application itself.Web-based CAD tools are alive in the lab [more...]

Autodesk Building Design Suites finally available for download
Every day of the past two weeks, two or three times a day, I check the subscription portal to see if Autodesk released the 2014 software. In between, I check the product trial pages. It's amazing how there's such little communication by Autodesk as to the release dates the products. In the past, I did my best to let you know as soon as I knew but, should you really have to depend on social media for information on a product you pay thousands of dollars for. There should be a notification in the software that automatically tells you of any release, patch, update or plugin. Maybe that's why so many people still use AutoCAD. They don't know that anything else exists. Today is also the day that Autodesk saves about 20 million dollars in producing and shipping you your software now that you're forced to download 15 GB of software. I wonder what happens to those people with slow Internet or that have a data cap. Autodesk should give you a discount for downloading the software. Anyway, it's time to start the dreaded downloads [more...]

COINS Auto-Section Box tool for Revit now available for download
Thanks to Bryan for finding this at http://revitaddons.blogspot.com/2013/04/free-coins-auto-section-box-gets-major.htmlIt kills me to see people who say they do BIM, but they don't include any 3D sections on their plans. What's the point of modeling everything in 3D if you don't share the visuals of how the building gets put together. Are these the same people who don't share their models? Here's a great free tool to make 3D sections quickly:http://apps.exchange.autodesk.com/RVT/Detail/Index?id=appstore.exchange.autodesk.com%3acoinsauto-sectionbox%3aen COINS Auto-Section Box3/14/2012COINS The COINS Auto-Section Box tool gives you tremendous speed and agility over managing three-dimensional views when analyzing model areas of particular interest. It allows you to quickly create temporary and permanent views to be used for immediate interrogation of the model or for construction document deliverables. This works by allowing you to focus on the model instead of managing views or a view’s properties. New features: • Support for Revit 2014 • New "Toggle Section Box" command • Ability to arrange the section box view side-by-side with the selected view • Support for creating section boxes from view outlines, section lines, and scope boxes • New "Quick Auto-Section" command • Worry-free selections - automatic filtering of 2d and datum elements Click here for a video showing the top 5 uses, including the new features.Freehttp://www.coins-global.com/usa/h/Solutions/Design_%26_BIM/451/ Download detailsDownload Size:1.5 MBLanguage:EnglishRelease Date:3/14/2012Company:COINSWebsite:www.coins-global.comCust. Autodesk Business Modernization: Electronic License & Software Delivery - IMAGINiT Technologies Industry News
Another nail in the reseller channel coffin. Go online, but your software directly from Autodesk, download it and get your serial number from them. Every few years Autodesk changes the serial numbering system. Will this method finally reduce piracy? I never understood the stupidity of their serial numbering system. All they do is add 99 to a number to come up with the next serial number. No chance of hacking with that system. I'm still puzzled as to what this means for subscription customers. It'd be nice ot have some clarity on this. Source/Link: http://blogs.rand.com/imaginitnews/2013/04/autodesk-business-modernization-electronic-license-software-delivery.htmlSerialized media changes were implemented March 28, 2013. As part of Autodesk's Business Modernization efforts, Autodesk has transitioned to electronic license and software (with optional media kits) delivery for the majority of their software products. This means that a serial number will no longer be attached on the product box – customers will now be able to purchase Electronic License Delivery (ELD) licenses, which will be delivered to you in an email along with a link to download the product. This ELD delivery method will be standard in the U.S., Canada, EEA countries, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, and Korea. Other countries will transition later. This step follows the initial launch of the ELD/ESD and Media Kits SKUs in December 2012. Electronic delivery of software licenses has become an industry-standard practice. It provides customers with more efficient and convenient access to their Autodesk products. What Products Does This Change Affect? The following will be offered as ELD licenses:AutoCAD LT SuiteInventor LTAutoCADAutodesk SuitesAutodesk Vertical software product [more...]

Revolution Design Revit plugins - Awesome
Wow, what an awesome set of Revit tools and so cheap. Finally, someone making time saving and affordable tools. I'd live the renaming tool for COBie projects and the selection tool must save hours of time. Revolution Design SoftwareCommercial ProductsRevolution Design has developed several commercial addins to enhance Revit productivity. Check them out below:Individual Tiered Licenses*$45 per Seat - 1-9 Seats$35 per Seat - 10 or More SeatsIndividual seat licenses can be purchased in any quantity and pricing is broken into tiers as shown above. One license allows the use of Revit workFlow (2012, 2013, or both) on a single machine.Bulk 50 Pack*$750 per PackBulk packs allow volume discounts for larger enterprises and must be purchased in the specified quantities. One license allows the use of Revit workFlow (2012, 2013, or both) on a single machine. Each bulk pack purchased may only be used within the purchasing company or entity.FeaturesautoLinkSee autoLink on Project Chronicle. One of the Revit's greatest strengths in the realm of documentation is the automatic coordination of view callout tags and the views' actual detail location. Change the detail number on a sheet and all view tags that reference that view update automatically. However, Revit has no similar ability with general annotations, text, or scheduled parameters... until now!Revit workFlow's autoLink function allows you to reference views from any instance parameter, simply by typing the view reference as you normally would with text. Views are then automatically updated whenever the view reference changes. Reference views from generic annotations and update automatically. Reference views in parameters and update automatically. With version 3.0, autoLink now allows you to reference views from linked files; whenever the location of that view changes the link is updated automatically, no coordination necessary!Reference views with a simple annotation symbol or within any parameter.Update links automatically when a view is moved.Fully customizable autoLink symbols and parameters.viewRenameSee viewRename on Project Chronicle.Tired of looking through default view names like 'Section 1', 'Section 2', and 'Elevation 1-a' to try and find the view you were looking for? Have you ever looked for 'Ceiling Plan - First Floor' only to find it at the bottom of the project browser because someone didn't read their standards and named it 'RCP - First Floor'? viewRename is your answer!View naming standards are extremely helpful when used, but too often users are in too much of a hurry to worry about renaming views and doing it properly. With viewRename, you simply set up your office standard naming conventions for various view types when you first set the program up and views are named by the standard automatically, no mess, no hassle and no lost views!Existing views can also be renamed to match the standard with two quick clicks!Set the office standard once and follow it effortlessly.Set a different standard for various types of elevations, sections, and callouts. No more lost views or generic view names.Update existing views to the standard in 2 clicks.Set View Template automaticallyUse Instant Updater option to name views immediately on creationfinishFloorsHave you ever wanted to model floor finishes in Revit but didn't want to spend the time creating floors in every room?finishFloors can create floors for just a few rooms or every room in your project in just a few clicks, automatically coordinated with your finish schedule!Just tell finishFloors what floor types to create for each finish code and which rooms need floors and they will be automatically generated with the correct floor type, offset by their thickness so that they will sit on top of the structural floor. Floors generated by finishFloors are linked to rooms, so if the room boundary or finish ever change updating the finish floor is one button click away! Automatically map finish codes from the finish schedule to floor types and generate finish floors coordinated with the finish schedule.Save your standard finish code mapping and settings will be automatically loaded.Finish floors automatically sit on the top of the structural floor. Finish Floors can have automatic thresholds created at doorways extending to the center of frame, face of frame, or no thresholds at all. When finishes or room boundaries change, update existing floors with a single click.Pre-select rooms to focus on a single area or select nothing to work with all rooms in the project. Use 'Floors by Click' to generate floors one at a time with a single click, just like Revit ceilings.dimensionCheckQuality control is vital to a good set of construction documents and proper dimensioning is vital when communicating a design layout to the contractor. Items that are not properly located can cost time and money in RFI's or costly re-do's when someone on site decides they know 'about where it should go'.dimensionCheck is designed to quickly and efficiently identify objects in a dimension plan that are not properly located to avoid unnecessary errors.Select a category or set of categories and find all elements in the current view that are not currently dimensioned.Quickly locate one or more non-dimensioned elements using the show tool to determine where the dimension should be placed or if one is necessary.Search only the current view, or all sub-views as well (i.e. enlarged plans).Non-modal dialog box allows you to find non-dimensioned elements, place the dimension, and then move to the next element without closing the command.Place several dimensions and refresh the dialog to see the remaining elements without dimensions.FeaturesSimple Keynote File EditingRevit's keynote system is a powerful way to integrate data into Revit families, reduce errors, and streamline documentation. The text files, though, are cumbersome and difficult to work with.Keynote Manager was created to provide a simple, efficient interface to edit keynote files.Edit keynotes in a tree view instead of a long list in notepad or ExcelAutomatically sequence keynote numbersAdd & edit new notes without worrying about tabs or formattingLocate keynotes quickly with the find/replace functionPerform find/replace on the key value, description, or bothMultiple users can work on a single file concurrentlyReorganize notes by simple drag and dropSelect multiple keynotes and renumber in sequenceComment & MarkupRevit keynote text files provide no ability for managers to mark up or comment on keynotes. With Keynote Manager's comment and markup system, comments can be added to any keynote and the history of the comment is tracked automatically.Create comments, update, and mark as completeTrack the dates of comment creation and changesConvenient comment panel lists all commentsReview comments for a particular note or for the whole keynote filePrint all keynotes or a subset for manual review and markupInfo LinkKeynotes can be linked to external documents or web locations and those documents can be opened from Keynote Manager.Files will be opened in their default editor and web locations will be opened in the default browser.Link to the Manufacturer's web site, content page, or specificationLink to a word processor specificationLink to an image of the installed productCreate as many links as desiredKeynote WatcherKeynote Watcher is an add in to Revit that monitors keynote files and notifies users of changes to the file.Locates keynote files for all open Revit projects.Monitors keynote files for changes and notifies users via aUnobtrusive notification icon (sTooltip trigger goes here.ee image to the right).Open keynote files directly from within Revit.Notifies users of the need to reload their keynote file.License activates with Keynote Manager, no need to activate twice.Available for Revit 2012 or later only.Standards and Quality ControlKeynote Manager allows a degree of quality control and standards enforcement not available in other editors, further reducing errors and increasing productivity.Formatting & parent/child relationships are handled by Keynote Manager so no more orphaned keynotes!Spell check function reduces spelling errorsQuickly enforce office standardsDefine master files & create new keynote files based on office mastersSet automatic keynote casing to UPPERCASE, lowercase, or Sentence CaseConvert casing for individual keynotes or all keynotes in a fileSet the font so the display in Keynote Manager matches the display in RevitBackup FilesEveryone knows the frustration of losing data or an entire file due to either human or computer error.Keynote Manager's distributed backup system ensures that if anything happens to a keynote file there will be a recent backup that can be restored and most if not all of your work saved.Text file and comment backups are distributed on all users computers so even in the event of a hard drive or complete computer failure another user will likely have a backup copyBackups are created automatically when a file is opened or closedBackups can be created automatically at a specified intervalSelect the number of backups per user (up to 999)Automatic LicensingFor enterprise licenses or large numbers of installations, it is desirable to avoid the need to visit every computer to activate it's license. Keynote Manager / Keynote Watcher recognize XML files with license data and automatically activate a license on startup if such data is present, allowing large companies to deploy and activate automatically without giving out their activation code. For more information click here.Tracking & ReportingKeynote Manager tracks some basic, non-personal data for use in our marketing and analysis of program usage. The following information is reported to Revolution Design:Program open and close timeProgram version & Executable path (11.5 and later only)Open and close time of each file (no file names or paths are collected)License type (trial or paid)You may also view a sample report here.$45 per SeatIndividual seat licenses can be purchased in any quantity. One license allows the use of Keynote Manager and Keynote Watcher (2012, 2013, or both) on a single machine.Features Robust Filter CapabilitiesSelection Master supports 6 types of filters:ParameterLevelLevel filters recognize level parameter, work plane, reference level, and schedule level so all offset beams, etc. are included.Level filters can be set to recognize multi-level elements like walls and columns by their top constraint, base constraint, or either constraint.FamilyCategoryPhase CreatedPhase DemolishedThe Selection Master full interface can be used to create filters based on any of these properties or combine as many filters as desired to refine the set. Find all doors over 7'-0" high on the second floor, or simply find every element related to the second floor level. Save Filter SetsWhile some filter sets are only usefull once, most can be usefull continually throughout a project or even across multiple projects. Selection Master allows you to save filter sets to be reused as many times as desired. Preview ElementsBefore returning to Revit, Selection Master allows you to preview the elements that satisfy the filters you have created. From here you can change your filters, further refine the set of elements, export a report, or have them automatically selected for you in Revit. Quick FiltersYou can use Quick Filters as a shortcut to easily apply the basic filters with predefined settings in a single click.Want to find all elements related to a certain level? Use the 'Quick Level' command.Want to quickly select everything created in Phase 2? Use 'Quick Phase Created'.You can even use Quick Level to avoid losing elements when removing redundant or unnecessary levels. RehostEver decide that a level is redundant and unnecessary but were afraid to delete it because you knew you would lose everything that may still be on that level? Or just place a series of elements only to find out that you were working on the wrong level? Selection Master to the rescue! If you need to delete a level, use the Quick Level tool to find everything on the level and rehost to move it; if you just placed some objects on the wrong level simply select them and use rehost to move them to the correct level. ReportingSelection Master not only allows you to preview the elements that match the filters, you can also export the data to a comma separated value (.csv) or plain text (.txt) file for use or analysis in any standard spreadsheet program. In addition to exporting the preview data, Selection Master also allows exporting of all the levels, girds, families, and phases in the project.Lastly, Selection Master allows you to view all plan and ceiling plan views in the project and sort or filter them by level and export this data to .csv or .txtSingle Seat Licenses*$25 per SeatIndividual seat licenses can be purchased in any quantity. 2014: Product keys for Autodesk products
Every year, Autodesk just changes the letter. This year it's F. Last year it was E. You want to know the product key for your Autodesk® 2014 products.SolutionProduct keys are required for installation of Autodesk products and are used to differentiate products that are both sold independently and as part of a product suite. For example, installing AutoCAD 2014 as a point product requires product key 001F1, but installing AutoCAD 2014 from the Autodesk Product Design Suite Ultimate 2014 requires product key 781F1. The same version of AutoCAD is in both software packages but the product key differentiates one package from the other.Note: Please ensure you are using the correct product key for the Autodesk product and version you are installing. Entering an incorrect product key will result in activation errors for that product. The product keys for Autodesk 2014 products are as follows:Product NameProduct KeyAutoCAD 2014001F1AutoCAD Navisworks Services & Support - Autodesk AutoCAD Plant 3D 2014 Object Enablers
Autodesk - Autodesk Navisworks Services & Support - Autodesk AutoCAD Plant 3D 2014 Object EnablersAutodesk offers free downloadable enablers that you can use to access, display, and manipulate object data in applications different from their native environment. This provides essential data accessibility for design teams who create or receive files using Autodesk software. In particular, the AutoCAD Plant 3D object enabler allows Navisworks users to directly retrieve property data while reviewing AutoCAD Plant 3D models.Navisworks: If you open a drawing that contains external references, properties for AutoCAD Plant 3D objects in external reference drawings may not display. To solve this, delete the NWC file for the external reference, load Navisworks, and open the external reference DWG before opening up the master drawing.EnglishAutoCAD_Plant3D_2014_ObjectEnabler_English_Win32Bit.exe(exe - 14274Kb)AutoCAD_Plant3D_2014_ObjectEnabler_English_Win64Bit.exe(exe - 14532Kb)Published date: 2013-Mar-25 ID: DL21330574Applies to:AutoCAD® 2014AutoCAD® Architecture 2014AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2014AutoCAD® ecscad 2014AutoCAD® Electrical 2014AutoCAD® Map 3D 2014AutoCAD® Mechanical 2014AutoCAD® MEP 2014AutoCAD® P&ID 2014AutoCAD® Plant 3D 2014AutoCAD® Structural Detailing 2014AutoCAD® Utility Design 2014Autodesk® Navisworks® Manage 2014Autodesk® Navisworks® Simulate 2014 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Join the buildingSMART alliance - National BIM Standards Provider• Are you getting your CM-BIM credential? Revit Tip - What to do when you lose your Finish Edit button
After editing a family group, the cancel and finish edit buttons disappeared from the toolbar. That can certainly leave you in BIMlimbo land since you can't get out of that edit window and save the project. So, here's the fix for it. Type KS on your keyboard and the keyboard shortcut menu pops up. Search for the word Finish and under every item that says Finish Edit (or whatever), type FF into the shortcut box and click Assign. You can actually use the same FF for multiple items. It doesn't matter because you can't really be editing different things at once. One note is that it may already say FG in the Finish Edit Group line item. You can add FF to that one as well. It certainly seems easier to just type FF every time you're done editing rather than having to move your mouse to the top and click the Finish button, if it's even up there. Now you can use FF for Revit FUn. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Join the buildingSMART alliance - National BIM Standards Provider• Are you getting your CM-BIM credential? Screen Scream
Before I get into my post, my April Fool's joke yesterday about Revit 2014 being available for download, was a joke, but then Luke actually posted links that you really could download Revit Architecture 2014. So, if you didn't and you have 2.64GB of time on your hands, go to the bottom of my subscription post and download it.I had a bit of indecision yesterday. I couldn't decide which device to use. Should it be the Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, iPad mini or Microsoft Surface? The Surface and Macbook Pro belong to Alix, but I thought it'd be fun to have lots of screens to choose from. We've been debating the pros and cons of the Surface. It has the same specs as my Macbook Air, but it feels heavier for some reason. It's a neat little machine, but Windows 8 is still annoying. It runs Navisworks and Glue just fine as it has a 4core I5 processor and 4GB of Ram. As far as the practicality of trying to use Windows standing up with one hand holding it is not great. The screen is too small to easily maneuver a mouse or the trackpad and Autodesk programs aren't geared for big fat BIM fingers. That being said, having a teeny tiny windows device tablet is potentially cool. Plugging the surface into my big fat Dell 27" monitor makes it great. So, the device for the field is much better suited for a bluetoothy keyboard and mouse with a big monitor. Having a computer that is the size of a paper notebook is a great idea. It's not a production machine since it doesn't have 16gb of ram or the best video card in the world. It's not there to replace an iPad. My idea is that you actually velcro an iPad Mini to the back of a Surface and then you have the best of both worlds. The Surface doesn't have 4G, so that's a problem with any Autodesk Cloud software if you don't have wifi. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Join the buildingSMART alliance - National BIM Standards Provider• Are you getting your CM-BIM credential? Can you go totally paperless in your BIM life?
My wife sent this to me the other day and it totally reminds me of myself. I have 16,000 notes in Evernote, have 120GB of data backed up in my Sugarsync account and I take pictures of receipts and any other paper and sync them to Evernote so I can use their awesome OCR feature and not have to worry about finding paper. Of course, I try to get my wife to be as organized. She swore she gave me our new car insurance card and I insisted she didn't because I would have taken a picture with FE Snap and it would have been in Evernote. Of course, she brought it home from the office the next day. So, watch the video. It's awesome for those of us trying to keep control of our lives in the paper and digital world.
